State officials have confirmed that a man fell from the top of South Falls, a waterfall at Oregon’s Silver Falls State Park this week. A 20-year-old man reportedly crossed a barrier to pose for a photograph in the water near the top of the falls. The person apparently lost his footing and went over the 177-foot waterfall. Witnesses attempted a rescue, but he died at the scene.

People who are familiar with the area commented on local news’ post about the death, saying that in order to be where this person was, he would have needed to enter a fenced-off area and ignore many warning signs. Unfortunately, fast-moving water doesn’t discriminate. One misstep, and even the fittest hiker can be swept away in an instant.
