One of Iceland’s most popular tourist destinations is temporarily closed due to a volcano. According to the Blue Lagoon’s website, a volcanic eruption began yesterday morning. The event led the company to evacuate the geothermal spa and close for the day.

The park remains closed today, and they say they are monitoring the situation for when they can reopen.

“We will continue to closely follow the guidelines and recommendations of the authorities, working collaboratively with them to monitor the progression of events,” wrote park officials on their website. “This commitment aligns with our unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our valued guests and staff.”

The Blue Lagoon is a massive pool where the temperature sits around 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Visitors from all over the world visit every year, as the destination is just a short drive from the country’s main city of Reykjavik and close to the international airport.

Media reports say the volcano that is erupting exploded for the third time since December. The lava flow blocked roads and destroyed a water pipe, cutting off water supply and heat to one community. Fortunately, no people are in any danger at this time.

Here’s a live feed of the volcano:

Iceland is known for its combination of volcanos and being partially in the Arctic Circle. The natural elements are where the island gets its nickname, “The Land of Fire and Ice.” Volcanos are part of life in the country, and in the past, smoke from the volcanos caused chaos in air travel in Europe.

Guests planning to visit the Blue Lagoon can modify or cancel reservations at this time and can do so through the Blue Lagoon’s website
