Photographer Matthew Raifman wasn’t expecting to find a rare animal when he and his family went out looking for tarantulas at a park in the San Francisco Bay area. Instead of a hairy spider, Raifman spotted something even better—a rare, all-white deer. He told SF Chronicle that it seemed like something “right out of a fairy tale.”

“My October surprise: finding my first albino deer in Northern California,” wrote Raifman in an Instagram post sharing photos and footage of the animal. “Albino deer occur once in every 30,000 births, meaning that there are only about a dozen of these across the whole state of California. You can see how much the white deer sticks out against the Northern California landscape compared to its siblings, making it more vulnerable to predators.”
