‘Our Best Trail-Cam Capture Yet’: Cougar and Kittens in Minnesota

The Voyageurs Wolf Project shared some exciting trail-cam footage showing a cougar with kittens—a first for Minnesota. The non-profit called the footage “without a doubt, our best trail camera capture yet.”

“[This is] the first documented observation of a cougar with kittens in Minnesota in modern history,” Voyageurs Wolf Project wrote in the Instagram post. “The footage, which was captured on March 25, shows a cougar with 3 large kittens while they feed on a deer they killed just south of Voyageurs National Park.”

The non-profit explains that it had begun to study the survival and mortality patterns of deer in the area, which led to scientists putting GPS-collars on several deer back in January. A few months later, Voyageurs Wolf Project says it received a mortality signal from one of the deer collars, and the buried carcass was a tell tale sign of feline predation.

After placing cameras near the cached deer carcass, they caught footage of the the cats coming back for their kill. Not bobcats, but cougars—a whole family of them.

“The entire family showed up that evening and spent hours in front of our cameras,” the caption reads. “In total, we captured 7.3 hr (435 minutes) of video footage of these animals.”
