French mountaineer, skier, and mountain guide Guillaume Pierrel recently died during an avalanche on K6, a 23,891-foot mountain in Pakistan. “Gee” Pierrel and two others were climbing the mountain when the avalanche claimed Pierrel’s life; the other two individuals survived. Now, a local search-and-rescue team has announced that they have recovered Pierrel’s body from the mountain.

“The rescue team has successfully recovered the body of French mountaineer Guillaume Pierrel from the extremely dangerous terrain of K6,” wrote The Karakorum Guides in a Facebook post sharing images from the effort. “We pay tribute to all the rescue personnel who took part in this challenging mission, risking their own lives to bring him home. Their courage, dedication, and professionalism deserve the highest respect and appreciation. Our thoughts and prayers remain with Guillaume’s family, friends, and the global mountaineering community during this difficult time.”
