Why Is This Eagle Swimming in a New Hampshire Lake? Just Wait.

Sharon McEleney Hilson noticed a strange sight outside her home on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire—a bald eagle “swimming” in the lake. But why? Was it injured?

Turns out, there was a very good reason for the eagle’s behavior. It had a large fish clasped in its talons, and it was too heavy for the bird to lift out of the water. Instead of letting its prize fish go, the eagle did the next-best thing. It kind of spy hopped across the lake until it found a rock.

Hilson shared the interesting video to a local Facebook page, u local New Hampshire, and it received a lot of attention.

Here’s what she wrote in her post:

“I noticed something unusual in front of our home in West Alton on Lake Winnipesaukee tonight. [. . .] I thought [the eagle] was in distress until it reached a rock and struggled on top of it with a big fish in its talons! It feasted on the fish for about a half hour before taking off.”
