Woman Reaches Halfway Point on Swim Down California Coast

Catherine Breed has officially swum halfway down the California coast. She’s also halfway done with her epic quest to be the first person to swim the length of the California coastline. (That’s 900 miles from the California/Oregon border to the California/Mexico border.) Breed began her journey in July, and as of mid-week, she’d swum 450 miles and passed Monterey Bay.

“Catherine officially passed the halfway point of #swimcalifornia today. 450 miles down, 450 to go,” wrote Breed’s team in an Instagram post sharing her milestone. “[. . .] Along the way she’s stopping in communities up and down the coast to highlight ocean conservation work, from kelp restoration to marine mammal rescue, and raising awareness for Sea Dreamers, her nonprofit getting girls and women into the sport.”

Breed and her crew have been at this for over 55 days, and they have a lot of coast left to cover. Her next big challenge will be swimming along the gorgeous Big Sur coastline as she continues south.
