A 7-year-old girl visiting California from Canada died after a strong wave pulled her into the Pacific Ocean. The girl was on a state beach between Big Sur and Monterey with her family when the wave came crashing down and dragged her into the water. The victim’s parents went in after her, and the father died in his attempt to locate and rescue his daughter. The mother and the girl’s young sibling both survived.

Officials in Monterey County, California have announced they found the young girl’s body with the help of a rescue diver. Many people in the public-safety community are using this tragedy to warn others about the dangers of rip currents and unpredictable weather at beaches, especially in stormy weather like the California coast has been experiencing for the past week.
