Being trapped beside a rushing brook during winter in New York does not sound like a good time at all. This is especially true when it comes after sliding down the face of a cliff. Unfortunatley, that is exactly what happened to poor Rudy.

The Patterson Fire Department shared a Facebook Post detailing the entire ordeal and rescue that followed. The department shared that they received a call, alerting them of Rudy’s dire situation. “At approximately 9:15 AM on Sunday, March 08, 2026, the Patterson Fire Department was dispatched to assist.” Also, they share that Rudy had “fallen down a waterfall and was trapped on a tiny outcropping inside the Michael Ciaiola Conservation Area.”

The rescue team was amazed that the dog did not harm itself when it fell down the cliff. Nevertheless, they knew his location was precarious and that this rescue was going to be tricky. With that knowledge in mind, “UTV 22-8-3 was immediately sent to the scene, along with our 22-6-1 Rescue apparatus, and 22-8-1 Fire Police.”

After arriving at the scene and taking in the amount of snow and ice, additional reinforcements were called in. Some of these reinforcements included UTV’s and specialized rope equipment to help bring Rudy up.

A Happy Ending To A Tragic Situation

When they finally found Rudy, rescuers noted that the poor pup fell approximately 15 feet down a cliff alongside Quaker Brook waterfall. Fortunately for Rudy, his luck improved the moment after the fall. The pup somehow managed to remain uninjured and avoided landing in the water. The rescue team found this to be an incredible feat, considering the “flow is currently at its annual high mark.”

Rudy’s luck continued as the rescue team got into position. After ensuring safety precautions were in order, Patterson Fire Department Captain Greco was lowered down the cliff using the specialized rope equipment. Any fear he had of Rudy being resistant to rescue quickly diminished. As soon as the captain reached for Rudy, the exhausted pup leaped into his arms. It was clear that Rudy was ready for this adventure to be over.

Once Captain Greco and Rudy were hauled back up the cliff, everyone took a sigh of relief. Later, Rudy was reunited with his grateful owners, but not before Rudy showed his own thanks by giving the captain a big, appreciative kiss.
