‘Absolutely Unreal’: Rare Whale Shark Spotted off California Coast

Whale sharks—the largest fish in the sea—generally prefer warm, tropical waters, so they rarely make it up to the California coast. However, a group of anglers on a Bongos Sportfishing charter recently saw a whale shark up close and personal near San Clemente Island, and they were properly shocked.

“Our ‘little’ visitor while fishing on the anchor this morning in between some fun yellowtail stops,” wrote Bongos Sportfishing in an Instagram post sharing footage of the whale shark swimming next to their boat. “We’ve seen some crazy stuff this year, this El Niños definitely keeping us on our toes every day . . . Absolutely unreal.”
