Katariina Gay and her kids were fishing at Greenfield Lake Park in Wilmington, North Carolina, when, suddenly, they spotted a large alligator coming out from under the bridge. Perhaps the most shocking part of her video, which went viral, was how quickly the alligator seemed to disappear after it climbed the spillway and entered deeper water.

“Well that was a sight to see!! The kids were fishing right along the bank when this huge alligator came out from under the bridge and made its way up into the spillway,” wrote Gay in her Facebook post sharing the video. “They almost had a heart attack! We think this one is about the same size as another one (Big Chungus) that hangs near the pond in our neighborhood, but we never get this close. What a sight to see such a powerful, majestic animal up close like this.”
