Early this week, a mystery marine animal bit a man swimming in the Foster City Lagoon, a 6-foot-deep drainage retention basin in the San Francisco Bay area. The thing is, no one remembers something like this ever happening before. So, what was it?

Local news reports that the police dispatch call signaled the victim as a 74-year-old male who a witness pulled from the water after he began screaming that something had bitten him. The man apparently believed the mystery animal was a shark.

However, no one can confirm a shark’s presence in the lagoon. Officials confirmed that the man was bitten “by a small marine animal,” but no one can yet say what it was.
