Last week, Montana’s Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) service shared pictures of a goliath-sized bear whose head reaches the roof of a shed.
“Black Bear or Grizzly?” the agency asked in the post, adding: “Here is a helpful hint: Grizzly bears are generally larger than black bears and may be bigger than a small shed.”
The Montana agency also advised that the grizzlies can be distinguished by longer, curved claws, humped shoulders, and a face that “appears to be concave.”
Jaime Goguen of Whitefish, Montana shared the photos on Facebook of the bear she named “Brutus” a few days before the FWP.
“Our old generator storage structure on Montana’s eastern front, has become Brutus’s personal scratch tree,” Goguen wrote. “Then he took a nap.”
In her post, she also asked people to guess the size and sex of the bear. In the more than 2,400 comments, some guessed the bear weighed 1,000 pounds while others, who used the shed as an indicator, guessed it was just an average-sized bear.
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, adult male grizzlies weigh 400-600 pounds on average, and females weigh 250-350 pounds.
