National Park Service Convicts Illegal BASE Jumpers in Yosemite

The National Park Service (NPS) is pursuing people who have illegally BASE jumped in Yosemite National Park. The NPS announced its law-enforcement officers have recently convicted three individuals for BASE jumping in Yosemite: Christopher Durell, Joshua Iosue, and David Nunn.

“BASE jumping in Yosemite has been illegal since the mid-1980s,” NPS states in its press release. “The activity has led to numerous injuries, fatalities and high-risk rescues over the years, endangering both jumpers and rescuers. In addition to criminal penalties, participants face the forfeiture of equipment and potential bans from entering national park lands.”

NPS provided further detail about the three BASE jumpers in Yosemite in its press release. In the case United States v. Christopher I. Durell, NPS explains that a judge sentenced Durell to 18 months of unsupervised probation, $600 in fines, and 40 hours of community service, plus he had to forfeit his BASE canopy and wingsuit.

In the case United States v. Joshua A. Iosue, NPS says Iosue received two days in jail, 24 months of unsupervised probation, and $2,510 in fines. He is also banned from entering Yosemite National Park during his probation.

Finally, in the case United States v. David A. Nunn, NPS explains that Nunn was injured and required a rescue during an illegal Yosemite BASE jump and had a previous conviction for the same offense back in 1998. Nunn was sentenced to two days in jail, 12 months of unsupervised probation, $760 in fines and $458.77 to cover the cost of his rescue. He is further banned from entering Yosemite during probation and had to forfeit his parachute and harness.
