Which animal is more ridiculous, a squirrel that couldn’t care less whether it’s standing next to a hawk . . . or a hawk that can’t catch a squirrel that’s 12 inches away from its body? A popular social-media video shows a red-tailed hawk perched on a back porch’s fence, when, suddenly, a squirrel joins the bird of prey on its perch.

The squirrel is there to eat something it sees scattered on the fence, and it seems not to care at all that a juvenile hawk could—theoretically—snatch it up in a second. The hawk doesn’t do that though. In fact, for a good long while, the hawk seems bewildered by the rodent’s audacity.

“Tony is a young red tailed hawk who hangs out in our yard,” wrote Jennifer Schlameuss Elsensohn in her Instagram post sharing the funny video. “He’s trying to learn how to hunt, but isn’t very good yet.”
