Baby Bison Causes Adorable Traffic Jam in Yellowstone

A baby bison who evidently just couldn’t even sat down in the middle of a road at Yellowstone National Park this week and caused a pretty adorable traffic jam.

In a video shared by Yahoo, the calf sits in the road surrounded by a small herd of adult bison protecting and trying to nudge it along. A few days after the footage was recorded, the National Park Service tweeted a few verses of a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air-style warning to give buffalo as much space as possible.

“In west Yellowstone, I was born and raised,” NPS tweeted, with a photo of a buffalo blowing steam. “On the valley floor was where I spent most of my days / Wallowin’ grunting, relaxing all cool / And eating lots of grasses, that’s right, no bull.”

Yellowstone’s bison population numbers somewhere between 2,300 to 5,500, depending on where the herds gather to breed, according to the park. Visitors can often find them in the Hayden and Lamar Valleys. Outside Yellowstone, you can also see them in nearby Grand Teton National Park, which receives slightly fewer visitors.

If you’re lucky enough to see bison on your visit, make sure to give them plenty of space. That means you should never approach them. Bison may look cute and fluffy, but they’re powerful animals and they’ve been caught on camera goring tourists who get too close. If you spot bison while driving, stay inside your car and stay out of trouble, lest you become another cautionary tale for future tourists.

Or, as the National Park Service would put it:

“When a couple of humans who were up to no good / Started making trouble in the bison neighborhood / I got in a scuffle and the others got scared / Mama said, ‘You’re movin’ with the heard, you need more space and fresh air.’”
