A Peaceful Hike Turned Dire

It is my firm belief that no one goes out on a hike expecting to get lost and or stranded. However, it never hurts to be prepared. You would be amazed at the number of people who go missing each year because they wind up stranded in the wilderness.

Young Vaughn Webb and Khang Nguyen could have easily joined that statistic. People Magazine shares the details about how the two teens were rescued from a mountain after surviving its harsh conditions. The duo was hiking the tallest mountain in New Hampshire when their problems began to arise.

Despite preparing for the hike, the teens realized they were quickly running out of their food and water supply. Additionally, 17-year-old Nguyen began to experience severe leg pain about halfway up the mountain. When speaking to WBZ, he shared that it was “incredibly painful to lift.”

Soon after, the pair began to struggle with the harsh conditions the mountain presented.

A video obtained by WBZ shares details about the rescue. In the video, Nguyen is speaking to the station, explaining what happened. Despite feeling well prepared for the hike and purchasing the proper gear, the pair quickly learned that anything can happen.

After Nguyen suffered an injury to his leg, he told his friend to go ahead without him. He stated that he instructed Vvaughn, “Leave me behind so I can go at my own pace.” Additionally, he told his friend to make it to the summit so he would be able to call for help, which he did.

Thankfully, the 911 call went through, and the dispatcher sent help to the boy’s location. People Magazine shared that “Conservation officers were able to contact an employee of Mount Washington State Park.” That employee later found the boys and brought them down the mountain to safety.

After the teens were rescued from the mountain, the employee gave them food, water, and medical attention. The two are now safe back at home, and Nguyen shared his gratitude for their rescue. “We are both very thankful for the assistance,” he shared. Adding that the employee saved their lives potentially.
