Thousands of Child Bike Helmets Recalled Due to Safety Issues

A popular outdoor gear company is recalling thousands of child bike helmets. Retrospec, a company known for affordable gear such as bicycles, skateboards, stand up paddleboards, and safety equipment, says there is an issue with its smallest helmets. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says the product isn’t up to their standards.

Retrospec sold 72,000 Scout Kids helmets in the U.S. and an additional 150 in Canada since 2019. While there have been no reported incidents of injuries, “the recalled helmets do not comply with the coverage, positional stability, and labeling requirements of the CPSC federal safety regulation for bicycle helmets.” In short, there is potential for the helmet to fail to do its job, which is to protect a child’s head.

The company has voluntarily decided to recall the helmet.

The child bike helmet recall is specific to the size small and XS helmets and comes in the following colors:

  • Blippi
  • Blush
  • Brash Blue
  • Chameleon
  • Cool Mint
  • Matte Forest Green
  • Matte Black
  • Matte Navy
  • Matte White
  • Matte Burnt Orange
  • Matte Green
  • Matte Royal Blue
  • Matte Whisper Pink

Anyone who purchased one of the helmets is eligible for a refund. Retrospec has a form on its website. To qualify, owners of the helmet need to upload a photo showing the helmet with the straps cut off, along with the person’s initials, date, and the Retrospec logo visible in the picture.

Afterward, consumers should throw the helmet away.
